The Yakima < > Indians are a Native American people of central Washington state. The Yakima once hunted deer, elk, and other animals. They also gathered food from wild plants. In summer, they moved often. Yakima fishermen built platforms near waterfalls or rapids on the Columbia River. From these, they caught salmon in nets with long handles.

The Lewis and Clark expedition met the Yakima in 1805. The expedition was an early exploration of the northwestern United States. In 1859, the Yakima joined 13 smaller groups on the Yakima reservation. A reservation is land set aside for Indian use. Today, most Yakima live on or around the reservation.
