Native American Cricket Mythology

Crickets play a variety of different roles in Native American folklore. In many South American tribes, the chirping of crickets is considered to bring good luck. In the Western United States, it is just the opposite: crickets are considered bad luck in many tribes, especially if they get inside the house. Cheyenne hunters believed that crickets could predict the movements of the buffalo herds. In Southeastern tribes such as the Cherokee, cricket legends sometimes depict them as plucky animals who succeed at things despite their small size. And in Mexico, crickets sometimes make an appearance in traditional stories as… food! (Roasted crickets and grasshoppers were a traditional delicacy in many Mexican tribes, and are still enjoyed by some people there today.)
