Native American Indians were a deeply spiritual people and they communicated their history, thoughts, ideas and dreams from generation to generation through Symbols and Signs such as the Moon symbol. Native American symbols are geometric portrayals of celestial bodies, natural phenomena and animal designs. For additional information on this subject refer to Star Chart & Astrology. The meaning of the Moon symbol was the protector and guardian of the earth. Different attributes were assigned to each of the full moons reflecting the seasonal characteristics. Different symbols could be added to the moon symbol to illustrate the time of the year. There are additional symbols that could be added to the moon symbol to describe the time of the year. The symbol for Snow and Hunger could be added to the Moon symbol to describe the winter months. Spring months might have symbols for birds, planting and grass. Summer months might have symbols for hunting and heat added. The Fall might show the Falling Leaf and sign for thunder.

The Moon Symbol – Meaning

There were so many tribes of Native American Indians it is only possible to generalise the most common meaning of the Moon symbol or pattern. Native Indian symbols are still used as Tattoos and were used for a variety of reasons and depicted on numerous objects such as tepees, totem poles, musical instruments, clothes and War Paint. Indian Tribes also used their own Colors for Symbols and designs depending on the natural resources available to make Native American paint.
