With Chief John Scow as his great grandfather and Chief Sam Scow as his grandfather, Ed comes from a long line of cultural leaders and artists based in Alert Bay. Ed’s Kwakwaka’wakw name is ‘Tlakwa’gila’ which translates to ‘Copper Maker’, and this name is reflected in Ed’s artwork, as many of his pieces are created from copper. Ocean motifs are common in Ed’s work, as he has held a life-long connection with the sea: first, harvesting seaweed, fishing, and digging for clams; later, working on commercial fishing boats; finally, guiding whale watching tours and continuing to fish. Ed takes great pleasure in teaching younger artists about Kwakwaka’wakw art and culture.
