Kuloscap is a great hero who owns a great pipe. He sits with his friend Pogunuk around a campfire. One night they were pinned down by ghosts who held a contest to see which ghost could frighten these two Abenakis the most. Each of the ghost chiefs tried to no avail to scare them to death. Finally, a ghost child tried his hand. Kuloscap pretended to be very frightened of the little ghost in order to shame the older ghosts. The ghost child, emboldened by his apparent success, then stole Kuloscap’s pipe and escaped. Kuloscap said to Pogunuk, “Maybe it’s not such a good idea to make something big out of something small. If I had left that little ghost small, he wouldn’t have my pipe.”
