James Sawyer works with bentwood boxes, panels, drums, paddles, prints, blankets, and gold and silver jewellery. His lineage includes uncle, Doug Wilson and grandfather, Ike Hans. He started carving in 1996, has apprenticed with Haida artist Pat Wesley, and cites Reg Davidson as being an influence. He often creates unique and innovative pieces that incorporate popular culture. For example, he fully engraved a Zippo lighter for us here at Lattimer Gallery, and he has also carved Haida designs within sterling silver, Iron Cross-shaped pendants.
