Indians have the same rights as all citizens, and have held most all levels of elective office. Charles Curtis, a member of the Kaw tribe, was vice president under Herbert Hoover. U.S. Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell, a Republican from Colorado, is amember of the Northern Cheyenne tribe. Campbell also served three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives as a Democrat.
