Selected by the Chicago Cubs out of Owassa High School (Owassa, Okla.) in the third round (No. 109 overall) of the June 2009 First-Year Player Draft. … Kirk joined the Chiefs on Aug. 23,2010, for his final three outings after making 10 starts with the Class A Short-Season Boise Hawks. … In three outings with the Chiefs, Kirk was 1-1 with a 3.55 ERA while striking out 17 batters in just 12 2/3 innings. … He threw a career-high 5 2/3 innings against Clinton on Aug. 28, and struck out seven against the LumberKings on Aug. 23. … With Boise he was 4-5 with a 3.31 ERA in 12 games and 10 starts. … He went at least five innings in five of his 10 starts with Boise, and struck out 48 batters while walking just 12 over 51 2/3 innings. … Kirk fanned a career-high nine on July 16 against Salem-Keizer over five shutout innings. … In 2009 he was 2-1 with a 3.95 ERA in seven games and two starts split between the AZL Cubs and Boise. … Kirk went 9-1 with a 0.45 ERA in 11 games as a high school senior, striking out 111 batters in 61 2/3 innings to lead Owasso to its 11th state championship in 13 years.
